My talented friend from college, Alexa Seidl MacKinnon Photography, took our family photos at Volunteer Park on a picture-perfect autumn day. Being a year and a half and constantly on the go, we spent the morning chasing Carter across the park. He is obsessed with balls of any type and insisted on inserting himself into an ongoing soccer game. Stealing the ball was much more entertaining to him than posing with Mom & Dad! Thanks, Lex – looking back on the pic of him waving with the stolen ball fills me with his carefree joy every time I look at it.
Two clichés have become very apparent over the last eight months: 1) it’s magical to see the world through the eyes of a child and 2) time flies with kids – which is why I compiled October-December holiday highlights in a lump sum. Carter has brought the most special joy to our lives, and the slew of holiday festivities were even sweeter as we established new family traditions with our first born. Pumpkin patch visits, a first night away with girlfriends, Santa pics and our white Christmas in Spokane was a flurry of fun. I’m amused now by the minor challenges, like Carter’s disregard for daylight savings the morning after Friendsgiving crept into the wee hours; and sharing a bedroom with him during his first cold at Grammy and Gramps’ Christmas. With our first Holiday season in the books, we look forward to the year ahead continuing traditions (I vow to dress up with him every Halloween until I become embarrassing) and creating new memories. Cheers to a colorful new year!
Carter James graced us as a 6lbs 10oz and 19” bundle of love at 11:10pm 5/7/16, just in time to spend our first hour of precious skin to skin contact during the first minutes of Mother’s Day. Named in honor of my mom’s maiden name (his due date was also her birthday!) and Curran’s dad’s first name, CJH is a tribute to two of the many special loved ones in his life. As evidenced by the outpouring of love and support, he is already one very lucky boy and our lives are forever changed!
One of my father-in-law’s most notorious traits is his sun worshiping – as evidenced by his year round tan. If the sun is peaking through Seattle’s overcast skies, he’s soaking it in. While this might be one of his most initially apparent attributes, his greatest is his sentimental love of family. So there was no better way to spend his 70th birthday than for seventeen of us to enjoy his favorite family vacation spot (where they’ve frequented since my husband was 9 months old). The laid back aloha and gorgeous sunsets haven’t changed over the years, making this our family’s gem full of great memories. Among our large crew, there’s always an anniversary, birthday or reason to celebrate which is a great thing as I’m ready for the next Sunset fete…
The holidays were particularly joyous this season at home, in snowy Spokane and at a family cabin on the Skykomish River. Surprising our families with our baby’s gender was the highlight… The best is yet to come in 2016 with a precious little boy! While it’s a thrill receiving something sparkly under the tree, I hope your year is filled with intangible gifts of love and family.
Rowy, affectionately named after the best cheeseburger from our neighborhood tavern, is my new studio mate, real life teddy bear and BFF. I’m in love.
